Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph announced the nominations for the 76th Emmy Awards from the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Wednesday 17 July.

FX’s historical drama series Shōgun, which premiered in February 2024, is this year’s top nominee overall and leads the Drama category with twenty-five nominations.

With twenty-three nominations, FX’s comedy-drama series The Bear set a record in the Comedy category for nominations in a single year.

This year’s other top nominees include Hulu’s mystery comedy-drama Only Murders in the Building, HBO’s crime-drama True Detective: Night Country, and Netflix’s historical drama series The Crown.

The controversial British dark comedy series Baby Reindeer created by Scottish comedian Richard Gadd, received 11 nominations, including for acting, writing, and producing.

Every year, nominations are decided by vote from 22,000 voting members of the Television Academy and recognise performers, producers, writers, directors, craftspeople, and other professionals of the television industry.

Television Academy chair Chris Abrego, who co-hosted the ceremony along with Hale and Ralph, said: “Television delivers stories that connect us, uplift us, challenge us, and always entertain us. Today, I am honoured to celebrate the outstanding work of our extraordinarily talented and hardworking creative community.

“This morning's Emmy nominations are a testament to their contributions and highlight the incredible programming that has risen to the top of an exceptional year in TV.”

The winners of the 2024 Emmy Awards will be announced during a ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on 15 September.

Our team’s picks

Editor, Phoebe Ann Brooks

Our editor Phoebe says: “Slow Horses is my favourite! Imagine James Bond was relegated to the loser table of MI6! Not only does it star ultimate girl crush Olivia Cooke but also my favourite actor Gary Oldman. It’s sneaky people being spies with plenty of sarcasm and swearing…I love it!

Sub-Editor, Clara Günthner

Our sub Clara says: “I am heavily biassed and it’s good I don’t get to vote in the Emmys because I think Andrew Scott deserves all the awards for anything he’s ever starred in! … but he absolutely and objectively smashed the role of Tom Ripley and I think an Emmy would be so well-deserved!

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT MANAGER, MADELYN HERRERA

Our social media person Madelyn says: “I not only want but NEED Sofia Vergara to win the lead actress for her role in Griselda. She is the FIRST Latina to get nominated for this category and is finally getting the recognition she deserves … I really hope she wins!!
